The frame of a Formula Student car uses a truss-type steel tube structure, welded from dozens of steel tubes. Due to the compact design, most component mounting positions are near their limits, placing extremely high demands on welding precision and control of welding thermal deformation.

The overall frame error must typically be controlled within millimeter level, while traditional manual measurement methods are not only time-consuming but also difficult to ensure consistency and repeatability.

During the manufacturing of the truss structure, two core technical challenges are particularly prominent: thermal deformation caused by the welding process, and positioning errors during fixture setup. Last season, the team used aluminum profiles to build fixtures, relying on tape measures and spirit levels for positioning.

Actual manufacturing results showed significant cumulative errors in the rear compartment area, directly affecting the installation and positioning accuracy of the suspension system, adversely impacting the operational stability of the vehicle chassis, and potentially introducing safety risks.

In contrast, the AlphaScan 3D scanner, featuring up to 50 cross blue laser lines, a maximum scanning speed of 7.1 million measurements per second, and industrial metrology-grade accuracy up to 0.020 mm, can efficiently capture every detail of complex structures, quickly obtain a true 3D model of the frame structure and perform precise fitting.

The color map generated from scanning allows intuitive identification of twists or positional deviations in the structure.

In automotive manufacturing, AlphaScan has been widely used throughout the entire process of dimensional inspection, deviation analysis, quality inspection, and reverse modeling.

Its companion software supports point cloud import, mesh optimization, deviation color map analysis, and one-click generation of inspection reports, outputting common formats such as STL, PLY, and TXT, seamlessly interfacing with mainstream CAD/CAM platforms, fully supporting the entire workflow from scanning to reverse modeling.
